How to Avoid Bicycle Accidents in A Busy City

Bicycling is a popular way to both commute and enjoy the outdoors. It’s eco-friendly, inexpensive and great exercise. However, there are risks attached to riding a bike in a busy city.

Biking has become an increasingly popular way to travel around cities in recent years. Some studies show that it’s also a very safe form of transportation. Still, it’s important to act as safely as possible when biking.

It’s especially critical that you’re careful when cycling in a busy area, due to the increased traffic and additional cyclists. Here are some tips you can utilize to reduce your chances of getting into a bicycle accident:

  • Stay off your phone. A cell phone is one of the easiest ways to distract yourself when biking, whether you’re texting, talking or listening to music. Keep it safely secured in your pocket.
  • Don’t linger in blind spots. As much as drivers need to be aware of you, you should be mindful of them – and when you might be out of their line of sight.
  • Signal well. Give drivers timely notice when you want to turn. Also, make sure you’re familiar with biking signals.
  • Wear a helmet. This may go without saying, but you should always wear a helmet. It’s against the law in California to bike without a helmet when you’re under 18. If a police officer sees this, you may get a ticket.
  • Follow the same rules as a car. Bicyclists must stop at red lights and stop signs, as well as for pedestrians in crosswalks. You must also bike on the right side of the road.
  • Keep your bike in good condition. You should frequently check your tires, bell, mirrors and reflectors to make sure they’re intact and working properly.

Biking can be an easy and fun way to get around, but it poses a threat if you don’t act carefully. Remember to follow these tips so you can get where you need to be safely, and return to your loved ones at the end of the day.
