Distraction May Factor in Rise in Parking Lot Auto Accidents

In California and throughout the nation, distracted driving is an ongoing problem. While this may be perceived as an issue when drivers are on the road, they can also be distracted and have accidents in other locations. Increasingly, people are being injured, and even losing their lives, in parking garages and lots. As with any accident, it is important to assess the situation and determine its cause when weighing your options in the aftermath.

Distracted Driving in Parking Areas Is a Danger

People who are driving in a parking area and those who have just parked their vehicles may be under the impression that they are free of distracted driving dangers. Unfortunately, that may not be the case. The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that 2 out of 3 drivers could be distracted as they drive into lots and garages. Around 20% of accidents occur in parking areas. A primary catalyst is drivers who are using their cellphones behind the wheel.

Because they are in a parking area, and they cannot drive beyond a certain speed, researchers think drivers are under the impression that they can multitask. Even people who do not drive while distracted on the road may be tempted. The NSC says that there is an average of 500 fatalities and a minimum of 60,000 injuries in parking lot accidents annually. One survey showed that two-thirds of the participants believed they could use their devices safely in a parking area. About half said they sent emails, used social media, took photos or watched videos. Video chatting was acceptable to 42%.

Experienced Advice May Be Essential After Parking Lot Accidents

Many of those who are hit when in a parking area are pedestrians, leaving them significantly more vulnerable to serious injuries and death. As with all auto accidents, people who have been hurt or lost a loved one will have many issues to address, including medical costs, lost income and long-term implications. For help with investigating the accident and considering whether a legal claim is a wise step, professional advice can be beneficial.
